A child is named

by Brynna Fish

Shiah and Brynna invite you to share in our Simcha, a naming ceremony at Chevrei Tikva on Friday, October 15, 1993, 8:30 pm at the Unitarian Society on Lancashire Rd. in Cleveland Heights.

In Judaism, the number seven is of great significance. Seven are the days of the week-in six days God created the earth and on the seventh day God rested.

Seven years ago I got a phone call that changed my life. My sister called, in trouble. I flew to Denver and came home a few days later with my 18-month-old nephew. Now, seven years later, I call him Shiah my son, and he calls me Mom!

On his own initiative he decided that since he and I are family, he wanted to use my last name as his, rather than the name of his father. So, we have begun the legal process to change his name, and will celebrate this occasion with a ceremony as part of the Friday, October 15 Shabbat. Thanks in advance to Gregg Levine and Howard Epstein for sponsoring the Oneg (refreshments) in Shiah's honor. In Biblical Hebrew, Shiah is a shortened version of the

Hebrew prophet Yeshiahu. In modern day Hebrew Shi means gift. Shiah has indeed been a gift to me.

Through our recent Rosh Hoshana and Yom Kippur season, Chevrei Tikva chose the theme "L'Dor Va Dor"-from generation to generation. As Jews we pass our heritage, our religion, our spirit, our culture, our essence as a people from generation to generation. We celebrate holidays with family, friends and sometimes with our congregation of origin or choice (extended family). Chevrei Tikva has been a special extended family for Shiah and me because it embodies what we want to share as a Jewish family.

Seven years ago we gathered together at Chevrei Tikva for the naming ceremony of Shiah Rosen. Shiah has grown. I have grown. Our congregation and community have grown. Please join us for this important life cycle event in our lives and our Congregation. L'Dor Va Dor, from generation to generation, we plant the seeds for our children.

NORTH COAST MEN'S CHORUS

CLEVELAND ▼ OHIO

Give it a try

by Jim Baxter

A new season, a new director, and a new emphasis on musical excellence and enjoyment. That's what's happening at the North Coast Men's Chorus, and it's not too late for you to become a part!

Our new music director is Cleveland Heights resident Tim Robson, who also serves as the music director of a major local religious institution. He has also served for many years as a chorus director and organist for various church and civic groups.

Tim holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and a graduate degree from Case Western Reserve University. All indications are that the Chorus will be in able hands, helping it meet its musical and community service goals.

And let's not forget concerts! A Holiday Concert in December, an Invitational in April, and a concert with the Flirtations in June will be the highlights for the upcoming season. Watch for further announcements in the Chronicle and other places around town.

So come to Judson Manor for our next rehearsal: Sunday night at 6:45 pm, 1890 E. 107th St., in Cleveland's University Circle. Ask any chorus member for more information, or call 473-8919.

There's no audition required, so why not stop by and see if you're interested? You just may be glad you did.
